A Rite of Passage to Manhood

Why is there a need for a Definition of Manhood

Without a clear definition of manhood for men and boys, there is confusion as to how one is expected to behave and one's responsibilities. Therefore, as a community, we need to be able to find a relevant and suitable definition of authentic manhood.
According to a dictionary, a definition is "a description of the essential qualities of something, the quality of being clear and distinct and sharpness of outline."

Process

There is a process for everything!

  • High School Certificate
  • To obtain a Degree
  • Becoming a Tradesman
  • Learning any Skill

In our culture there seems to be no clear process on how one becomes a man.
What is a man is expected to do?
How does a man behave?
When does one know when he has arrived as a man?

A Strategy is Needed

We need specific training experiences for boys and men to understand their masculinity.
It is foundational, for all that men do and all that they are and are to become.
Why do we need specific manhood training?
- To teach boys and men how to:-
* Give and earn respect, study hard,
* work hard, relate to women and establish a personal code of ethics.

Process oriented versus program oriented

The Hebraic model of training involved direct participation, emphasizing process rather than rote memorization. The wisdom and character and personal relationships of the leader were integral aspects of the training. By contrast, a program-oriented model primarily conveys information; thus, the leader's personal life is immaterial and personal relationships optional.

A Rite of Passage to Manhood involves :

  1. Coming under Dad's influence from about the age of 6 to around 12
  2. From 12 to 17 having the outside influences of other men
  3. At around the age of 17 the boy needs to choose to be initiated into manhood
  4. The community of men need to recognise him as a man
  5. The community at large needs to recognise that this transition into manhood has taken place.

Community Involvement

Government cannot be held solely responsible for fixing the problems faced by communities. Government and communities need to work together if community life is going to improve.

There is an enormous wealth of resources in our communities, both financial and personnel resources. Positive influence in communities is harnessed when wider community relationships are developed.

So how do we, as a community help these young people through this transition from adolescence to adulthood?

"Parents should work with schools to enable a form of Rite of Passage for their sons ... ... realising that some mark of transition from boy to man is an essential ingredient in reducing risk taking behaviours by young males trying to prove they are men." Ian Lillico
