Steve Biddulph from his book "Raising Boys" states :
"that around 14 years of age a new stage begins." He believes this is the age when we fail kids the most. In our society all we offer the mid-teens is "more of the same": more school, more of the routines of home. But the adolescent is hungry for something more. He is hormonally and physically ready to break out into an adult role, but we want him to wait another five or six years! It's little wonder that problems arise. What's needed is something that will engage the spirit of a boy - pull him headlong into some creative effort or passion that gives his life wings."
The "Passages" program is a hands on practical program to impart a vision for manhood through weekly mentoring, weekend and school holiday camping programs.
The program is structured over 5 years. Each year of the program corresponds to the 5 years that a young man will normally progress through high school. Boys between the ages of 11 to 17 (grades 7 to 12), in small groups of 8 will attend 1 weekend camp per term. Answers to the following questions will be explored over a 5 year period :
- What is a man?
- What is a man's responsibility?
- What does a man believe?
- How does a man behave?
- What should a man try to achieve?
Each year is themed as follows:
